Harnessing Time for a Full New Year

With holiday plans cancelled we ended up staying put and clearing up all the loose ends of the cosmically crazy 2021.

One of the year-end rituals I’ve been busy with is transferring planners — yes, the old school hard copy version that helps make time more concrete, to find the nooks it hides out in when I can’t find it and harness it for my highest good.

I used to obsess over finding the perfect planner, believing that would help me take control over time. But now I opt for the cheap ones you find at TJ Maxx for less than $10, then spend the turn of the year adding in all the information that helps me ritualize the weeks, months and seasons of the year ahead.

These include:

  • New and full moons, creating a biweekly cycle of cultivation and release.

  • Holidays, the Jewish and Muslim ones my family celebrates, connecting us to our ancestries and creating a rhythm to the year.

  • Anniversaries, of marriage to celebrate and of deaths to commemorate with a candle and prayer.

  • Daily practice, time for which needs to be fiercely guarded or else it gets swept into the current of the day.

  • Weekly blocks of time for cleaning, finances and other admin, so they don’t pile up into mounds of overwhelm.

What’s the most important block of time in your calendar for 2022?
